Southern Cornerstone
Beginning with the Southern corner a survey party, lead by Andrew Ellicott, placed stones one mile apart to mark the boundary of the District of Columbia. The Southern corner stone was erected with great ceremony on April 15, 1791 on Jones Point along the Potomac River in Virginia. It was the Residence Act of 1790 that authorized President Washington to locate new federal city along the Potomac River. In 1847 the Virginia portion of the District was returned to the state by the federal government. In 1916 the Daughters of the American Revolution erected fencing to preserve the remaining stones.
Lighthouse building is seen on right side.

Scioto River and Olentangy River Confluence, 1918
This photograph captioned “Where the Rivers Meet” accompanied a Norwester magazine article titled “The Work of the Mound Builders,” which was from the book Ohio History Sketches. The article discusses Indian mounds in Ohio and specifically mentions one located just northwest of the city of Columbus on the Scioto River, just above its junction with the Olentangy River. Factory smokestacks are visible in the background. Within Franklin County, Ohio there are 132 Indian mounds, some of which were found along the Scioto and Olentangy Rivers, one near the Marble Cliff quarry, south of Trabue Road, and a sizeable one on Dublin Road near the water plant.

louisiana flood and refugees of 1912
—-“The flood of 1912 was caused by a combination of high waters from the Ohio, Cumberland, and Tennessee rivers, and the Mississippi River above Cairo. Below Memphis, the St. Francis and White rivers added additional waters to the flood. The flood started about the middle of March, but its destructive potential was not known at the time. There were two crests of the Mississippi River at Memphis in 1912. The river first reached flood stage on March 24 and did not fall below it for sixty days. The greatest crest occurred.” On April 6, when the stage was 45.3 feet, five feet above the previous high-water mark in 1907. The second crest of 38.9 feet occurred on May 10.”
